A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. In cataract surgery, the lens in the cloudy eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens to restore vision. This procedure is usually outpatient and does not require an overnight stay in a hospital or other care facility.
